At the height of the ginning season, the gin would run on a twenty-four-hour basis. Farmers would sleep on their wagon loads of cotton during the night, each waiting his turn for his cotton to be weighed, unloaded, and ginned.
Cass County’s War Memorial monument on courthouse square in Linden is placed “In honor of those who served our country.” Nearly every month, some recognition observance is called to attention. In this month of September and upon each third Friday, National POW/MIA Recognition Day is called to mind. The remembrance is for those who were prisoners of war and those who served and never returned home. The Department of Defense Accounting Agency continues the search for the missing. Up until 1916, Zeak Pool owned and operated a steam powered cotton gin in the center of Doddridge. Then, in the summer of 1916, all of Doddridge east of the railroad burned to the ground, including the gin. The gin was a total loss except for the boiler, which remained intact.
