Yes, the Atlanta Area Chamber of Commerce’s first Gobble Wobble 5K run and Drumstick Dash Saturday attracted runners -- from ones just a few years old to others several decades old.
The town of Avinger, founded in 1876, was named in honor of Dr. H. J. Avinger who gave the first depot there to fled River & East Line Railroad when it came to his farm that year. He supplied the lumber from his sawmill and hired the labor to build the depot. It and Dr. Avinger’s general store across the sandy road were the first two buildings in town. Prior to that. Dr. Avinger had operated the store at his home on the old Jefferson — Daingerfield road, one-fourth mile north of Avinger. He was the first depot agent.

Members of the Law’s Chapel Methodist Church Outreach Committee and others from the church presented a check for $5000 to Mike Steward, Commander of the American Legion Post #258 on Veterans Day 2024. The church’s November monthly mission was to raise money for the Atlanta American Legion post’s ongoing project to erect war memorials for each war or confict including Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and more, and the first responders of 9-11. This money will go toward the Gulf War Memorial.
