Centerpoint Energy sent out a note to their customers on November 5, letting them know that natural gas prices will increase over the winter months because of a number of different factors. However according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), it will not only be natural gas you may have to worry about, they “reflect energy expenditures for all uses, not just heating. Already at the pumps, people are also seeing those energy prices begin to move up.

November 2 election came and went with little stir locally since there were only a few things in the area that were voted on. Eight state propositions were voted on, each detailed below. The biggest stir on election night had everyone looking outside the state towards Virginia and New Jersey as several heated races occurred, with republican upsets and near upsets in what typically are Democratic strongholds. Virginia elected republican Governor Glenn Youngkin. Besides the tight race for Governor in New Jersey, little-known Jersey truck driver Ed Durr defeated a top state Senate power broker with less than $10,000, and only $153 in advertising. Annalists have argued those two races may set the stage for the next election both nationally and here in Texas.

Louise Hawkins [Louisa in the probate records], daughter of Benjamin Hawkins and Rebecca McIntosh was 5/8 Creek. She was born on December 27, 1833 at Ft. Gibson, Indian Territory and died February 20, 1920 at Checotah, Oklahoma. She is buried at the Checotah City Cemetery. Louise married James C. Scott on Tuesday, April 23, 1850 at Refuge, the name of her mother’s 1900-acre plantation north of present-day New Prospect in Marion County. The newlyweds “with Rebecca Hagerty present” entered into a marriage contract which declared Louisa would be legally “femme sole” (a woman in her own right) and in complete control of all property real or personal that she had acquired before her marriage and would acquire after the marriage. [Cass County Deed Book D, pages 106- 109.] Louis was known for her fine sewing and received a teaching certificate from the first Normal [Teachers] School at Muscogee, Indian Territory in 1883.
