Food Price Outlook, 2024 and 2025

There is little doubt if you have been to the grocery store lately you have seen prices spike in the last couple of years, especially during covid. 50 years ago you could purchase a dozen eggs for around 74 cents. Interestingly enough, in 2004 the prices only jumped up to $1.28. In 2018, sixteen years later they came in only a modest increase of $1.74. Today the average cost in Texas for a dozen eggs is $5.43.

Rowe appointed to statewide board

It was announced through the Cass County Connect newsletter that Cass County Sheriff Larry Rowe was recently appointed to serve on the statewide board for the Sheriff’s Association of Texas. Sheriff Rowe was sworn into office at the 146th Annual Conference of the Sheriffs’ Association of Texas in Fort Worth.

Daughters of 1812

Mark Epperson Chapter United States Daughters of 1812 members attended last week’s Texas Society board meetings and workshop in Temple, TX. Pictured left to right are Kay Stephens, Edith Thomas, and Tammie Duncan Blackburn.Tammie is the Texas Society Chaplain and Mark Epperson Chapter President. Edith is one of the chapter’s newest members in 2024 and was honored as a new member at the Temple meeting. Kay is chapter registrar and Texas Society Lineage and Historical Records Chairman.

Melvin Coats: Barber, friend

Editor’s Note: The following story was first published in 2010 and is now updated on the occasion of barber Melvin Coats’ death. He and his barber friend Curtis Hunt of Linden had some 129 years experience barbering in Cass County.
