H.R. 82 passes, will affect the retirement of government workers

Congress passed the H.R.82 Social Security Fairness Act of 2023, introduced by Rep. Graves, Garret [R-LA-6] on Jan. 9, 2023. On Friday, Dec. 20, the Senate voted 76-20 with bipartisan support and signed into law by President Joe Biden on Jan. 5, 2025. According to the congressional website, the “bill repeals provisions that reduce Social Security benefits for individuals who receive other benefits, such as a pension from a state or local government.”

Former AHS student graduates SFA with high honors

Pasqualita Burleson, the daughter of Winneolia Burleson and the granddaughter of the late Waymon Burleson and Mae Lois Burleson (Atlanta Independent School District Coach/Principal, and Teacher/Librarian) graduated from Stephen F. Austin University, Nacogdoches, Texas, on December 14, 2024, with high honors. Pasqualita graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health. She is a 2019 graduate of Atlanta High School. Pasqualita expresses gratitude and appreciation to her family, teachers, Fine Arts Club, and the entire Atlanta Community for all the love and support shown to her over the years.

- In the July 3 newspaper, it was announced that Liger Interests opened its Atlanta office for lithium exploration: In their press release, the company announced, that Liger Interests (“Liger”), a leading lithium exploration company in the area has announced that it will open a field office in downtown Atlanta, Texas, located at 116 N. East Street. The office will serve as the headquarters for the company’s operations in the region and will help facilitate its commitment to forming personal partnerships with landowners. Mayor James Brooks is one of the partners.
