The Texas Department of Public Safety issued a release saying that the Texas Rangers are investigating an officer-involved shooting that that took the life of an Avinger man. John L. Stanford, 39, died Monday after he exchanged gunfire with a DPS trooper. According to a press release from DPS Sgt. Adam Albritton an unidentified DPS trooper pulled over Stanford at approximately 10:30 p.m. on U.S. 259 in Gregg County. - The Texas Secretary of State has accepted Cass County’s application to participate in the county-wide polling place program for the November 7, 2023, constitutional amendment election. Cass County’s application to the Secretary of State followed a six-month-long process of planning, compiling information, conducting public hearings and gathering input from the public. Cass County exceeded the minimum public meeting requirements by holding four public hearings across the county to discuss the potential for countywide voting. Citizens in Hughes Springs will be pleased that the Cass County Commissioners Court also decided to add an additional early voting location in their community and have already purchased the equipment to support that location. - - As Atlanta Rabbit fans prepare to welcome in another football season, they may not be aware that it has been 100 years since the Rabbs were born. Coach Ed Rabb came to Atlanta as a young lawyer after World War I in 1919. Having been a football player at Cumberland University he decided to form a club team in town built around young guys who were both in and out of high school.
